International Mandela Day - 18th July

International Mandela Day - 18th July

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s  birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.

It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.

The message behind Mandela Day is simple – each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better.

If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build a country of our dreams.

The baton of leadership has been handed over to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive difference.

2014 is particularly symbolic as we work to honour a great statesman and make every day a Mandela Day as we mark South Africa’s 20 years of democratic freedom.

The Great St John’s Priory Bake-Off

The Great St John’s Priory Bake-Off

Over the past few weeks, all the pupils at St John’s Priory School have been baking, for fun and to raise valuable funds for the school’s chosen charity, the Ithembalihle Orphanage (Zulu for ‘Place of Hope’), near Durban, South Africa, in the first ever ‘Great Priory Bake-Off’.

Using ingredients generously provided by Banbury baking company, Fiddes Payne, the children made and decorated cupcakes which were then judged by year group.

The school’s very own Paul and Mary - Headmaster, Paul Cawley-Wakefield and Deputy Headmistress, Mary Joiner.

All participants received a certificate to reward their efforts and the year group winners were awarded prizes kindly donated by the BBC’s ‘Delicious’ magazine and Kiddy Cook.

Following the judging all the cakes were sold to parents at pop-up bake sales and the pupils raised a fantastic total of £110.

This takes the total raised this academic year to £1,012 and the grand total since adopting Ithembalihle as their chosen charity in September 2010 to £3,945.

On behalf of all the children and staff at Ithembalihle and Goodwill & Growth for Africa UK a MASSIVE thank you to all the children, staff and parents at St John’s Priory for your support.

Conference - 27th September 2014

Conference - 27th September 2014

As a member of ‘Together 4 Africa’ ,a membership network of small charitable organisations working in Africa, GAGA has taken on the organisation of the next conference. Which is going to be held in Stratford upon Avon on the 27th September. At the last conference a link was created between KYGN, Tanzania  and GAGA and as a result GAGA sent funding  for  the construction a new school building  at at the KYGN project.  Networking as a charity is extremely important  and we are ‘better together’.

If you would like more information on the conference or to join us please email  chomer@gaga-uk.org
